Amazon Game Studios’s first foray into the industry, an MMO called New World, was a financial and commercial success, peaking at over 600,000 concurrent players on its release date. It was so successful that the game servers couldn’t hold all the players, leader to server shortages for weeks after release.

New World is an exploration and faction based MMO; players focus on collecting and crafting resources more than fighting one another. Combat is simple and slow, and quests are standard MMO fare. Still, fans of games like Runescape jumped for the chance to play a new entry in the genre, and New World didn’t disappoint.

After its early peak, the New World playerbase has been steadily dwindling, now only half of its day one. Despite this, it is still one of the most successful Western MMOs, thought that could be attributed to the lack of competitions. In the past few years, dozens of MMOs either born or ported to the West have died in development or soon after launch. Some of New World’s only competition includes Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online. Each of these games fill a different niche, letting each of them breathe.

New World also succeeds from its business model. Unlike Final Fantasy XIV, whose high monthly subscription costs puts off many players, New World is available for a single payment. This does mean Amazon Prime subscribers do not get to play the game for free.
