After its tenth anniversary announcement of several new games, Riot Games has started hiring for their MMO team. In a nondescript post, Greg Street announced that Riot Games was hiring for the upcoming game.

Ghostcrawler announces that Riot Games is hiring.

While this is exciting news for League of Legends and MMO fans, the tweet shows that the game will not be available to play for another four to five years at least. MMOs are massive undertakings; four years would be a short timeframe to develop one, and six is likely a more realistic figure.

Little has been revealed about the MMO; what little we know is as follows:

  • It is set in Runeterra, League of Legends’s universe.
  • According to concept mock-ups, it has a top down camera, similar to Path of Exile.
  • It will not be out for several years.
  • Greg Street, also known as Ghostcrawler, is the lead developer.

This MMO will challenge established genre giants like Final Fantasy XIV or World of Warcraft and recent contenders like New World. The MMO market is far from saturated; many MMOs, both created locally or imported from the East, fail and close within weeks or months of launch. Some examples are Wildstar, Worlds Adrift, City of Heroes, Dynasty Warriors Online, and Firefall. With Riot Games’s backing, it is unlikely that Riot’s MMO will follow the same route, but they must be careful not to fall to the same flaws that killed these games.

Riot announces a slate of new games, including an MMO.
